It All Began Like This
It was 2006 when Renzo’s dream took shape in the Viterbo area of Tuscia: a house on a centuries-old oak tree, surrounded by gentle lavender hills.
Renzo Stucchi
Renzo Stucchi, a trained pastry chef, was born in Legnano (MI) in 1948. From a young age, he displayed a brilliant personality and a strong entrepreneurial spirit that would soon lead him to manage some of the finest pastry shops in the vibrant Milan of the 1970s.
During those same years, he met love: Rosella Rancani, then an employee at the Milan headquarters of the fashion house Cacharel. In a short time, Renzo’s entrepreneurial qualities led to his appointment as CEO of Cacharel, and from that moment, his life changed forever. The love between Renzo and Rosella was crowned by the birth of Cinzia and Elisa, and for thirty years, the couple devoted themselves to the world of fashion, dividing their time between Italy and Provence, living a dynamic, elegant, and creative lifestyle.
Until, in 1999, Renzo felt the call toward something new, and after a long and intense search, destiny led him to Arlena di Castro. Here he came across a farm estate abandoned for seventy years, in the locality of… La Piantata.
La Piantata 1822
Climbing the steps of the nineteenth-century farmhouse, Renzo pauses on the threshold, turns, and lets his gaze run to where the horizon meets the sea. “Yes,” he murmurs, his eyes filled with emotion, “I will start again from here.” Thus La Piantata 1822 was born.
Located in the heart of a 40-hectare estate, the farmhouse that today hosts the Stucchi family represented the first agricultural enterprise in the area, established in March 1822. Here stand 1,800 olive trees of the prized Canino variety, planted according to the ancient system that spaces them 8.50 meters apart: a technique that allows the plants to grow harmoniously, ensuring better sun exposure and greater airiness. It is precisely this natural balance that contributes to the superior quality of the oil produced at La Piantata—more fragrant, pure, and rich in aromatic notes. Completing this unique setting, the Arrone stream crosses the entire property before plunging into the sea after a 35-kilometer journey, along with an Etruscan tomb from the 4th century BC, an ancient washhouse, and gentle hills once used for grazing.
It is precisely those hills that now embrace the 15 hectares of lavender surrounding the Suite Bleue, the house built among the branches of the centuries-old oak: a combination so harmonious that it has made La Piantata 1822 internationally renowned.
The first priority was to clear the area of brambles and brush and restore the ancient farmhouse by recovering the original materials, using only 5 elements: tuff, terracotta, glass, chestnut wood, and wrought iron. Authentic materials, chosen not only for their beauty, but because they are able to dialogue with the surrounding landscape: tuff and terracotta preserve the memory of local tradition, chestnut brings warmth and naturalness to the spaces, wrought iron tells the story of the region’s artisan craft, and glass lets in the light, creating continuity between the house and nature. Subsequently, drawing on his thirty years of experience in fashion and his passion for design, Renzo gave shape to his dream by designing treehouses, wellness spaces, forest paths to rediscover harmony and practice silvotherapy, embracing a friendly tree.
Over the years, Renzo and Rosella have become among the leading Italian producers of organic lavender with Essenze d’Etruria, a natural cosmetics line based on lavender essential oil and honey, beeswax, and extra virgin olive oil: a perfect synthesis of aesthetic sensitivity, respect for nature, and psycho-physical well-being.
No Trampling on Dreams
Here at La Piantata, Renzo always says that “trampling on dreams is forbidden“. It was not easy to overcome the skepticism of institutions and the slowness of Italian bureaucracy, still poorly informed about permits and constraints for this type of project; it can happen that, in an initial phase, they consider the initiative impossible and discourage its realization. To accomplish what we have created here at La Piantata, it took courage and tenacity. Courage to break free from the patterns of a society that wants us rational and conformist, sterile and globalized. Tenacity when confronting long, often convoluted and contradictory bureaucratic processes. After all, “if at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it” said Albert Einstein, and we like to think that this crazy and extravagant idea would have appealed to him.
Today La Piantata is also managed thanks to the invaluable collaboration of the two daughters Cinzia and Elisa, who look with pride at the dream built by their father and help it grow every day, adding a touch of modernity, youthful taste, and technological innovation. With their sensitivity and contemporary vision, they have enriched the offering with exclusive events and helped make the place known to the international market as well.
In a business that combines tradition and vision, we now offer our guests 2 treehouses, 2 elevated glamping solutions in the olive grove, a wellness apartment with private pool and sauna, as well as 4 rooms and 3 ground-floor apartments, all hand-frescoed in Provençal style. Completing the offering are a unique botanical walk designed by the Agricultural University of Tuscia, and a spa path immersed in nature—the first in Europe—private and exclusive, featuring 3 stilted stations with sauna, Turkish bath, emotional shower, hydromassage, relaxation area, and massage room.
