Experience Tuscia

Tuscia is the name given to Upper Lazio, corresponding to the province of Viterbo, north of Rome, and owes its origin to the ancient inhabitants of this land, the Etruscans, and to the importance it held in the Middle Ages as the “Patrimony of St. Peter in Tuscia”.

La Piantata is located in the heart of this land, an area rich in historical and natural beauty that continues to captivate thousands of visitors each year.

Here are some suggestions to discover it!

Archaeology and art: among villages and hidden treasures

tuscania-1

Tuscania

Romanesque Jewel

Zeffirelli chose it as the set for his Romeo & Juliet (1968), but before him the Etruscans, the Lombards, and the Aretine painters of the Giotto era made it their privileged seat: with its Belvedere, Tuscania has won the hearts of kings, artists, and men of faith, an unmissable jewel of Romanesque architecture.

Among the 12 churches that the village hosts, the basilicas of San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore, masterpieces of early Christian art, are not to be missed.

montefiascone

Capodimonte, Marta and Montefiascone

The southwestern shore of the lake

Capodimonte, a picturesque village with its Rocca Farnese where the story of Beauty and the Beast, made famous by Disney, was born.

Marta, a fishing village historically linked to the figure of Amalasuntha, Queen of the Goths, exiled and killed on the adjacent Martana Island.

Montefiascone, a historic village at 600 m above sea level, is known for its spectacular panorama and for delighting palates with its DOC wine “Est! Est! Est!”

Between nature and ancient history

Ancient Volsinii is renowned for its namesake lake, the largest volcanic basin in Europe, and as the “city of the Eucharistic miracle” (1263) that occurred in the Basilica of Santa Cristina and is now celebrated worldwide on Corpus Christi.

Every year in June, the traditional “infiorata” is celebrated through the streets of the historic center, which for the occasion are covered with carpets of flower petals.

Farnese
